Samuel Berthod, a French world class clarinet player of many styles, started playing music from the age of five,
and gave his first concert as soloist at the age of 16 at the Périgord Noir International Festival.
He studied in Paris with Alain Damiens and then in Frankfürt with Armin Ziegler.
He plays classical, jazz, klezmer, gypsy, contemporary, free-jazz, improvisation.
Recipient of the 2002 Laureate of the Beracasa / Radio-France Foundation for young soloists,
he was invited to play at the Radio-France Festival ( Brahms Quintet & Sonata n°2 ).
He has also performed in France, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Denmark, Canada & Australia.
Open to different musical universes and encompassing his compositions in various world music styles,
he has written a major orchestral work entitled Venus Symphony, a piano concerto, a klezmer concerto for clarinet & orchestra
and numerous other compositions exploring rhytm and melody.
He has also been invited to collaborate on numerous albums, such as : Green Cap ( Cesaria Evora, Sony ),
Sahara ( Hasna El Becharia, Sony ), Marocco ( Binobin ), Children songs...
"Djoïka", his own album of Gypsy & Klezmer music, recently won two Awards from Virgin and MCM.
Now based in Paris, he shares his time between performing concerts, arranging and composing.
His performances are not to be missed and show beauty and clarity in tone, interpretation, improvisation, and above all musicality.

Encouragé par ses maîtres qui voient en lui un jeune prodige, Samuel BERTHOD interprète le virtuose
Quintette pour clarinette & quatuor à cordes de Karl Maria von Weber au Festival du Périgord Noir, alors âgé de 16 ans.
Son premier concert en soliste.
Il décroche le 1er Prix à l'unanimité au Conservatoire National d'Aubervilliers-La Courneuve ( Paris ),
aboutissement d'une excellente formation avec son professeur Alain Damiens.
Il décide ensuite d'approfondir ses connaissances de l'Ecole Allemande à Francfort, auprès d'Armin Ziegler.
Fruit original de ces études, une double facture Franco-Allemande en résulte :
. clarinette Française & embouchure Allemande.
Lauréat 2002 de la Fondation Béracasa / Radio-France,
Samuel Berthod est retenu sur 5000 candidats tous instruments confondus, et est invité dans ce cadre
à donner un récital au Festival de Radio-France Montpellier, en direct sur France-Musique.
Il se produit en musiques classique, jazz, tzigane, klezmer, free-jazz, techno & musique contemporaine,
également improvisateur, arrangeur & compositeur dans toutes ces musiques.
Ses concerts et master-class le mènent régulièrement en Europe ( France, Allemagne, Suisse, Pologne, République Tchèque,
Slovaquie, Danemark ), Canada et Australie.
Son premier album Tzigane / Klezmer en solo "Djoïka" a reçu 2 Coups de Coeur : Virgin & MCM.
Professeur, notament de Klezmer, au Conservatoire Russe de Paris Serge Rachmaninov de 2003 à 2006,
il compose la première méthode pour apprendre la musique Klezmer Juive d'Europe de l'Est
( voir onglet Scores ).
Il habite Mahé aux Îles Seychelles, puis Canberra en Australie.
Il s'y produit et donne une série de concerts, master-class & interviews en 2010 :

-> ABC News, Canberra Times, Cairns Post, Cairns Cominity Radio, ABC radio Cairns ( interviews )...
2010 est également l'année de participations à deux albums importants en Musique du Monde, parus chez Sony :
- Cesaria Evora, Cap Vert
- Hasna El Becharia, Sahara
Deux portraits TV lui sont consacrés sur France 3.
Samuel BERTHOD réside désormais en France, se consacrant plus que jamais à la composition
et à la scène en soliste.
